KEY FACTS: This 1995 BMW 540i is a well-presented and largely original example of a rare E34-generation 5-Series variant, which has been used and maintained as intended from new. Under the bonnet is the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre ‘M60’ V8 producing around 287bhp, which is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The odometer displays 338 357 kilometers from new. This 540i is believed to be one of only 74 left-hand-drive Euro-specification sedans that left the factory with the manual gearbox and the M-Sport package. First registered in September 1994, this example has been with its current and seventh owner for three years. It was delivered new to Germany, prior to being imported to Sweden in 2008, where it remained until May 2019, when it was imported into Finland and end of 2022 was imported to Latvia.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES: This BMW 540i is finished in the timeless hue of Arctic Silver over a grey leather-trimmed interior, punctuated by dark wood trim inlays on the dashboard and door cards. It rides on a non-original set of 18-inch ‘Style 37’ alloy wheels (Restored) which originally came from a 1995 BMW M5, which are fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. The rare M-Sport package is understood to include firmer suspension. Factory-fitted equipment includes electric windows, electric sunroof, electrically adjustable door mirrors, air conditioning, and heated front seats .As well as its replacement alloy wheels, the car has also been fitted with a set of aero door mirrors from a 1995 BMW M5. The vehicle will be accompanied by some history from Sweden and some invoices from its time in Finland, as well as a 2019 dynamometer readout showing power at 287bhp, Also all invoices from Latvia.
CONDITION: The seller is not aware of any bodywork damage. The Arctic Silver paintwork is described by the seller as being in generally good condition, and has been resprayed during the car’s lifetime. The seller notes that there are some stone chips on the front bumper, another chip on the lower front edge of the driver’s door which has been touched in, several blemishes in the paint on both sides of the tailgate, and a minor color difference between the front and rear doors on the nearside of the car. Inside, the cabin presents well, with the seller noting that despite the car’s high mileage that the only defects present are some minor scuffs and scratches, as well as some light wear on the driver’s seat bolsters. Other than this, the seller is not aware of any electrical or mechanical faults, and they state that there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard. The car’s last inspection of roadworthiness was conducted in August 2023, during which the seller reports that no warnings were noted.
SERVICE HISTORY This 540i’s latest service was carried July 2023. Gaskets, oil and filters, rust protection, deep cleaning. Prior this the car maintenance was carried out in July 2021 at 336,000 km by Robert’s Classics. The work comprised of a routine maintenance service including an engine oil and filter change. Prior to this, the car was serviced in 2019 when it arrived in Finland at around 334,000 km. This service included a change of the spark plugs, lambda sensors, servo pump, servo oil, support arm and bushings, valve cover gaskets, engine pad and fuel pump, and also a power measurement on the dynamometer which showed 287bhp.
SUMMARY This BMW 540i is a rare left-hand drive, manual example of BMW’s esteemed E34-generation 5-Series, which was also specified with the sought-after M-Sport package. Boasting a powerful V8 mated to an involving manual transmission, this elegant and well-built 540i is reported to be in fine health, and would make an ideal addition to any collection of modern classics.
